Its about 10 years ago now that I read The Princess Diaries books. I think I got to number five before I was bored. Anyway, I always liked the original movie, partly because I could relate to Mia in her shy, awkward, inexperienced with boys ways, and partly because, well... wouldn't it be cool for someone to show up one day and tell you you're a princess? lol
The story is fun, the mild romance is sweet, and the whole story plays out as a half- fairytale / half- moral tale that I really enjoyed. I had hoped the sequel would build on this, but it didn't.
Don't get me wrong, there's plenty to like about 'A Royal Engagement', but after all the cuteness of Mia & Michael, I wanted to see them end up together, instead of her falling for Nicholas in this new movie.
Thats my only problem really. I fixed on a ship, like I do with most stories, and I wanted that, not what I was given. Nothing wrong with Chris Pine, of course, he's just not Robert Scwartzman, y'know?
Julie Andrews and Ann Hathaway shine in both movies, no doubt, and for them alone I am quite happy to watch both movies over and over, but in my head, Michael bust in at the end of the second movie and swept Mia off her feet. That is all ;)
