I love musicals. As a child, I mostly watched these old-style musical films of yesteryear and from time to time I still go back and revisit them. Doris Day was a wonderful leading lady - singing, dancing, acting beautifully, and lighting up the screen throughout all her wonderful movies. Then there was Grace Kelly, so beautiful and elegant, you just couldn't fault her.
Both High Society & Young at Heart also star Frank Sinatra. So many have tried to copy his voice, but I don't believe anyone ever can. He has a singular sound, a singular look, and I'm captivated whenever he's on my screen. You don't mess with Old Blue Eyes.
Still, my favourite part of High Society has to be Bing Crosby. CK Dexter Haven, its just the most wonderful name, and his chemistry with Grace Kelly as Tracy Lord was unrivaled, even by her beautiful relationship with Frank Sinatra's Mike. The songs throughout the film are just wonderful and catchy - I love every single one, and Louis Armstrong stole the show any time he was on screen.
In comparison, Young at Heart has its fair share of drama rather than fun, but the songs are just as compelling and beautiful. Frank Sinatra singing One For My Baby gets me every time, and I never imagined he and Doris Day could have such chemistry until I saw this movie.
Of all the musicals I love to go back and watch over, these two are definitely right up there on the favourites list, and the music lives on forever in my head and heart.
