Two very different sci-fi shows, and just about the only two I ever got into, but they do have their similarities.
Red Dwarf hails from the 80s but is still going today. A British sitcom set in space, I got into it via my Dad - it was and remains one item on an extremely short list of things we have in common.
Firefly is Joss Whedon's short-lived futuristic Western, with a cult following. I stumbled into it after devoruing Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel the Series.
Whilst one show is comedy and the other is mostly drama, both are very character-driven. There are no aliens, and the focus is not really the gadgets and technology, though they do exist. Both shows rely on the characters and their relationships, as they float through the blackness of space with limited resources and different kinds of rules.
I love both in very different ways. These DVDs are well loved and well worn, and I couldn't imagine parting with them!
