I love musicals, and Rogers & Hammerstein made some of my most favourite movies. Of all of theirs, Oklahoma was always the best for me, and so I have two versions.
First, I have what I'm pretty sure is the original with Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones. I love it, I must have watched it 100 times from when I was a kid to now. The chemistry between the actors and actresses, the wonderful songs, the comedy and the drama, as cowboy Curly charms farm girl Laurie in the soon-to-be state of Oklahoma.
I didn't think I would like any other version of this movie, and yet when I heard I could get a stage version on dvd starring Hugh Jackman (drools just mentioning him) I had to have it. The truth is, for me, its not as good as the original that I know and love so much, but Hugh Jackman as Curly does work, as does Maureen Lipman as Aunt Ella.
At the end of the day, I love the story, the songs, and both the movies, but as usual, original is best for me :)
