...and WOW! I mean, seriously, wow. I was a little sceptical because as much as I love Bucky (and y'all know I do!) I'm not the biggest fan of Sam... or Sharon Carter... or Zemo. So, yeah, I really wasn't sure whether it was something I was going to enjoy, but actually, I LOVED IT!
Obviously, my favourite part of the series was Bucky working through his issues, because he's one of my absolute favourite MCU characters and this is no secret! He has been through soooo much and was still going through it when the series started. He was so precious trying to date the girl at the bar, saying he was 106 years old and that the gloves were for poor circulation. Bless his heart! I ached for him when I realised the old guy he was hanging out with was the father of a guy he had to kill as the Winter Soldier, but at least, in the end, he managed to tell him the truth and ease a little pain on both sides. Oh, and the part when they flashed-back to Wakanda, when he realises the trigger words don't work on him anymore and he cries. Ugh, I teared up myself. It was amazing! Bucky really ran the gamut from cute and funny to really pained and tortured in this and Sebastian Stan played the hell out of the role, as he always does. I just loved it. Of course, in my ideal scenario, Nat would've come back somehow and they would've got (back) together too, but you can't have everything... except I can, because there will probably be fanfic ;)
Anyway, the surprise for me was how much I came to like Sam. I think maybe I have always been such a big fan of Steve and Bucky and Nat that Sam was just the other guy in the Cap films for me and I could take or leave him, but having him be the focus here and struggling with where he fits and whether he's meant to be Falcon or a new Cap, I feel like I got to know him better and I liked what I got to know! Love that we got to meet his sister and nephews and learn about his parents. Really liked how he handled the tough situations of (1) someone else getting the Cap title and shield, (2) finding out there was a black super soldier that was treated horribly, (3) dealing with the leader of the Flag Smashers who was just a young girl with problems she felt she needed to solve. Anthony Mackie as Sam handled it all so well, carried a lot of weight on his shoulders, and by the sixth episode, became the Captain America that he was always supposed to be. He won't ever be Steve Rogers, but he's not supposed to be. He's a new Cap for a new world and I was surprised to realise it actually works and that I'm okay with it. Steve will always be Cap simply because he's the original, but yeah, Sam as Cap works too, no doubt.
Having Zemo and Sharon Carter come back was fine. I don't care much about either character, so I'm a little 'whatever' about that. Very weird seeing a guy I know as Harley Wilkes from Hart of Dixie as Zemo's butler/assistant guy who blew up a bunch of other bad guys, but hey, versatile actor, what can you do? lol I did love seeing the Dora Milaje again, most especially when Ayo made Bucky's arm fall off :P Those ladies kick ass and I am here for that. I'm here for anything that links Bucky back to Wakanda, and honestly, I would love for him to go by White Wolf in the future. I mean, I feel like he's moved past being Winter Soldier now, because that was all the bad guy stuff, right? When the title changed at the end to Captain America and The Winter Solider, I kind of would've liked to see Captain America and White Wolf. Maybe that's just me ;)
So, yes, I am very glad I got a chance to see this show. It was awesome :)
